about

Debut release from Ontario pop playmakers Olinda is not one but two singles of light, shade, dreams and death. 'World Within’ finds singer Josh Klein 'lost in a dream.’ One of new love, which like any good dream is real in the intensity of its feeling but easily snapped out of. Marr-ish guitars shimmer and climb over fidgeting Balearic electronics, ascending and falling at once like the ebb and flow of our lover's dream. The song itself encompasses another dream of sorts: a songwriting partnership burgeoning on telepathy; evolved over two decades of friendship between guitarist Peter Burke and the aforementioned singer. As expansive and rich as their sound is, the reach of a certain group of Danish aesthetes can't be ignored. Not to mention other influences, often blandly reduced to descriptions like 'synth pop.' 'dance music.' You know the ones!

'Sleep is the cousin of death' some dead fella once said and the first half of 'The Chalice' speaks to that over a deceptively cheery vocal which welcomes an early demise. A 'Be My Baby' drum connects the song to its second act which remains as opaque lyrically as the music is luscious and sparse. Is it anti-organised religion? Disenchantment at a hopeless political environment? Klein might steer you one way or the other but hey! The author is dead, baby and Barthes has been subbed for Roland synthesizers. 'Words mean nothing' they cry.
What's my excuse then?
(Kieran Owen)
